Herbal Activism

So, after two weeks of actively following, posting and supporting Standing Rock from a distance, there is a bit of a reprieve? No, not really. It seems that the activism has only just begun because the perversion is so deep. This time let's turn our focus to the pharmaceutical company Insys. This company is the maker of a powerful, addictive opioid drug called Subsys. This is a fentanyl-based medication that is being marketed and may be fatal to users. Presently, the company is facing numerous state investigations for their deceptive marketing. Originally, this was a medication used to treat cancer pain. It is estimated to be 80 times as potent as morphine and hundreds of times more potent than heroine. Doctors are now being coerced by the pharmaceutical company to prescribe it for off-label uses.

Recently there have been statistics released stating that opiate pain medication use has decreased by 25% in states that have legalized medical and/or recreational marijuana. It's no doubt that the opposition against the legalization of recreational marijuana in Arizona, which is on the ballot for this November, is being spearheaded by Insys. The company claims to have developed a synthetic pharmaceutical cannabinoid and are trying to kill a non-pharmaceutical market in order to line their own pockets. The campaign against the legalization of marijuana is funded by the sale of such opiates.

There is so much wrong with this besides the obvious, which is that the research done in the application of and the benefits from medical marijuana have been phenomenal. It is no surprise that the pharmaceuticals are trying to prevent the public from accessing this plant but to do it by marketing a highly dangerous and potentially fatal mis-applied pain medication is worse than sinister. Once again, the consumer looses whether it be through an addiction to the medication or by these companies attempting to gut the market with their own synthetic cannabis.

Beyond the ethics of opposing such a beneficial botanical is the outright criminal behavior elicited by Insys and some medical doctors in promoting and consciously allowing patients to become dependent, addicted and very like injured by the treatment. If you look further into the physiology of pain you will see that many situations are temporary. Recovering from an injury, post surgical pain, or a degenerative disease such as arthritis can all present pain. All scenarios do not necessarily warrant the use of pain relief medication, certainly not one that is 80 times stronger then morphine or heroine! Pain due to injury or surgery is usually temporary and probably should be managed as such with short term use of medications and other adjunct therapies such as physical therapy or holistic modalities. This is not to dismiss that pain can also be constant and lifelong but if treated properly there can be recovery from pain not using an additive medication. When there is a degenerative disease such as arthritis, the use of pharmaceutical to manage the pain will usually lead to a worsening not strengthening, a progression of the disease/pain and a complete dependency on the drug.

Please understand that I am not trying to prescribe not dictate what one's choices in the area of pain relief should be but in the even that other, more natural techniques or less damaging drugs are are available then we should have the right to use what we feel is best for our bodies and our minds.
